First meeting of the 18th Century Reading Group!

Thanks to everyone who responded to our poll! The first meeting of the 18C reading group will be held next Wednesday, September 2 from 2:15-3:30 in the Parker library (and every other Wednesday thereafter, same time). It will be a preliminary meeting to discuss which texts we will read this semester, so come with recommendations! After that, we will meet biweekly, except for September 9, when we'll meet in preparation for Helen Thompson's talk on the 10th (Sassafras Room, 4:00 pm). To get us started, we've selected the first two readings:

Wednesday's 2:15-3:30 in the Parker Library
September 2: First meeting; determine reading list
**September 9: Special meeting in advance of Helen Thompson's talk**
**September 10: Helen Thompson, IMU Sassafras, 4:00 pm**
September 16: Henry Mackenzie, The Man of Feeling (1771)
September 30: Sarah Fielding, The Adventures of David Simple (1744)

Please sign-up to join the C18 Reading Group!

The Eighteenth-Century Studies Reading Group is gearing up again for the semester! We are an interdisciplinary group that meets every other week for casual discussion. As a group, we choose texts based our interests (or personal obsessions/dissertations).Our first two meetings will focus on two sentimental novels: The Adventures of David Simple by Sarah Fielding (1744) and The Man of Feeling by Henry Mackenzie (1771).

If you are interested in joining us for our discussion, please enter your schedule into a Doodle poll, so we can set a meeting time: http://doodle.com/7zmxb9f4pydm8hbz#table
We are planning on having our first meeting next week.

We will also be meeting to discuss articles by visiting speakers ahead of their talks (this year Helen Thompson, Sandra Macpherson, and Jonathan Kramnick will be coming!). So, if this sounds like a group you'd be interested in, send either of us an email at thutchgoetz@gmail.com (Tracey) or katblake@indiana.edu (Kate) and we'll add you to the list. We'll send out another email once we get started and have a set schedule. You can also check out our facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/IU-Eighteenth-Century-Graduate-Reading-Group/1436298106614492?fref=nf) and Blogspot (http://c18readinggroup.blogspot.com/)

Special notes:

During the first meeting, we want to create a list of texts that we could discuss this year, so please bring suggestions with you! We will create a poll on this webpage based on your suggestions and ask everyone to vote for the readings they want to discuss. Though we will start by looking at sentimental novels, your suggestions should include anything you're interested in.
