First meeting of the 18th Century Reading Group!

Thanks to everyone who responded to our poll! The first meeting of the 18C reading group will be held next Wednesday, September 2 from 2:15-3:30 in the Parker library (and every other Wednesday thereafter, same time). It will be a preliminary meeting to discuss which texts we will read this semester, so come with recommendations! After that, we will meet biweekly, except for September 9, when we'll meet in preparation for Helen Thompson's talk on the 10th (Sassafras Room, 4:00 pm). To get us started, we've selected the first two readings:

Wednesday's 2:15-3:30 in the Parker Library
September 2: First meeting; determine reading list
**September 9: Special meeting in advance of Helen Thompson's talk**
**September 10: Helen Thompson, IMU Sassafras, 4:00 pm**
September 16: Henry Mackenzie, The Man of Feeling (1771)
September 30: Sarah Fielding, The Adventures of David Simple (1744)

  1. Yay! I may be able to pop in a little late for this first meeting--and pop out early, too--because I have to meet with Jesse at 3ish. BUT: In case I can't make it, I have a few reading / event requests:

--An Austen Dinner With event in which we read Emma and criticism (it's coming up on it's 200th anniv.)
--An ASECS/Conference Proposal Review Session for those interested

    Readings:
    (so, Austen's Emma)

Ann Radcliffe, either Mysteries of Udolpho or (the shorter option) Romance of the Forest (the latter would be interesting if we read Emma, since Harriet Smith wants Robert Martin to read it)

    John Clare Poetry

    Felicia Hemans Poetry

Margaret Cavendish, Sociable Letters (bit early, but hey)

    Thanks people!
